Passionate about environmental issues? Discuss ideas, thoughts and opinions with other undergraduate students, and researchers from across Canada and Japan.

Apply by November 30, 2009 for a chance to be selected for a trip to Tokyo, Japan to attend the Japan-Canada Consortium forum, hosted by Meiji University. This forum will be from February 15 - 23, 2010.
(Airfare, accommodation and ground transportation between Narita Airport and hotel in Tokyo is provided)

Application forms can be submitted to Xiao Zhang at the Prince Takamoto Centre here on campus (through east Asian Studies). Her email is ptjc@ualberta.ca and she is located in 3-25 Pembina Hall.

Academic Status


- One (1) undergraduate student from each Japan-Canada Consortium member institution will be selected to attend the Forum in Tokyo.

- Third- or fourth-year students will be given priority, although applications will be accepted from all undergraduate students.

- The area of study is open, but the student must have a strong interest in environmental issues in Canada, and preferably in Japan as well.

- Applicants should be in good academic standing.

- Knowledge of the Japanese language is NOT required.

- Applicants should demonstrate strong leadership skills, but must also be a team player.

Travel Costs

The following costs will be covered for the student by JACAC:

- Airfare between the nearest major airport and Narita, Japan.

- Accommodation in Japan.

- Ground transportation between Narita Airport and the hotel in Tokyo.

Students must pay for the following expenses:

- Ground transportation to/from the local airport, including daily transportation in Japan (approx. $100).

- Meals (approx. $200).

- Other personal expenses (travel insurance, Visa, etc.)

Travel Plan

Students will depart Canada on Saturday, February 13, 2010, and return on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Students are responsible for making the necessary arrangements for any missed classes (a letter of invitation can be provided if required). Hotel arrangements will be made by the Forum organizer, and students will most likely share a room with one or two other students.

Student Selection Process

Students should apply by November 30, 2009, by submitting the following to their respective institutions:

- An objective statement (300 words max).

- Completed application form (can be downloaded online at http://www.ptjc.ualberta.ca).

- Copy of academic transcript(s).

- References (at least two, preferably including one from outside the university).

Successful applicants will be notified by December 18, 2009. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected for participation in the Forum will be contacted.
