Take your creativity into the world of textiles and hand-paint 2 silk scarves!

This art is available as a HECOL 353 course, but not for long....The last session of this course happens this SPRING!

Now's your chance to either prep for the spring course, refresh your skills or try something new that you may never try again. You will take home 2 scarves that represent your own creativity and possibly improve your wardrobe.

Spend a Saturday with us and you won't be disappointed.

Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011
Time: 10 - 3pm (or whenever your done)
Location: Human Ecology Building--the main floor surface design lab
Cost: $40 includes 2 pieces of silk, dyes, and everything needed for the project

Bake Sale! Volunteers needed.

Dear Human Ecology Students:

As you can see, some improvements were recently made to the HESA lounge
(the basement of HEB, where students can grab a snack, chill out, work
on group projects, nap, etc.) The efforts took a lot of care and
attention, and in the end we spent some money to buy all the shiny
pretty furniture that Human Ecology students will cherish (and use
responsibly, and maintain) for years to come... Which is why we are
asking for your help. We will be holding a popcorn/bake sale in AGFOR on
Wednesday March 31, 2010 to help recoup some of the expenses. This will
probably be the last fund-raiser for HESA this year, and we appreciate
all the baked goods you can muster! Please respond by e-mail, or talk to
any HESA executive, or just leave your baked goods in the HESA lounge
(by 9:30am March 31)... If you are able to work a few hours of the sale,
please let us know!

HESA Elections 2010!

HESA Elections 2010 is approaching fast!


Support HESA! Come out and vote for next year's executive members, or nominate yourself as a candidate. Being part of HESA offers amazing volunteer opportunities and it looks great on your resume.


For those interested in running for the upcoming election, here is a list of the positions and a brief description of each role:


Please note that this is a condensed version of each role's responsibilities. If you have further questions, please contact hesa@ualberta.ca for more details.


President
• To be a leader, for the Executive, for all undergraduate students in the Department of Human Ecology, and in the community.
• To be ultimately responsible for any decision made by the Executive, or any action/function/organization on behalf of HESA.
• To oversee the running of HESA and to ensure that the other Executive members are fulfilling their duties as specified in this constitution.


VP Academic
• To be responsible for all the duties of the President, in the event that the President is unable to fulfill said duties, until such a time as the duties are re-assigned.
• To be primarily responsible for cases (student issues/complaints) that require HESA intervention, and are deemed appropriate for intervention by HESA.
• To be responsible for attending all and bringing issues to undergraduate program committee meetings, and other relevant bodies.


VP External
• To be responsible for keeping ties to the professional community.
• To encourage undergraduates to build a strong network with the professional community and assist them as is necessary to do so.
• To be the liaison between HESA and the Alberta Home Economists Association (AHEA), keeping in regular contact with an AHEA representative.


VP Finance
• To keep track of all monetary transactions, including gifts and donations.
• To produce an annual budget report to the Department of Human Ecology identifying the uses of the yearly grant money received from the Department.
• To attend monthly Executive meetings and give an update on HESA’s financial situation.


VP Student Life
• To plan, organize, and implement student activities organized to bring together undergraduate students of the Department of Human Ecology.
• To help develop social and professional ties between students, student groups, and the broader community, including but not limited to the University of Alberta campus.
• To inform HESA members, the Department of Human Ecology staff and students of upcoming HESA events through email and other various facets of advertisement with the assistance/help of the VP Promotions.


VP Promotions
• To be responsible for all communication in the form of email, memos, and letter writing, with the various organizations and/or services that HESA will be in contact with.
• To be responsible for communicating HESA news to students, faculty/staff, larger community (including the Human Ecology community).
• To be responsible for making any required posters and distributing them.
• To be responsible for the maintenance and development of the HESA website.


Secretary
• To be the Administrative Contact on behalf of HESA for Student Group Services (SGS).
• To be responsible for recording minutes at weekly Executive meetings.
• To be responsible for creating and distributing meeting agendas to the Executive.
• To be responsible for making any necessary updates to all HESA documents (constitution, roles and responsibilities, etc.).

E4C Field Trip

HESA has planned a field trip to E4C on Wednesday March 17th for a tour
(information session) of the facility and a lunch made by E4C's Kids in
the Hall Bistro ($15). If you would just like a tour, the lunch is
optional and there will be no costs. Meeting time is at 10:00 am in front of
the HUB LRT entrance and we will return to school around 1:00 pm.

E4C's Program Manager with the Nutrition & Community Services, Emily
Wolbeck PHEc, a Human Ecology grad, will be showing us around. She ended
up at E4C through the practicum program and will discuss how her degree
has prepared for this job. Also, she will discuss about all of E4C's
programs and services with a question and answer period during lunch to
finish off our trip.

HESA will be hosting a Stuff Swap on Thursday, March 4th from 5:00pm - 8:00pm in the Human Ecology Building Room 301.

Cost for HESA members:
$5.00 if you bring items to swap
$10.00 without items

Cost for non-HESA members:
$10.00 if you bring items to swap
$15.00 without items

Examples of Stuff:

Items must be in good condition and not contain content that may be offensive in nature.

All proceeds and leftover items will go towards the Bissell Centre.

By-Election for "VP Academic"

Hello fellow Human Ecology students!

HESA is currently looking for a new representative on the HESA Executive to assume the role of VP Academic. Due to personal circumstances, the current representative needed to resign from her position.

The role of VP Academic is outlined as followed:

• To be responsible for all the duties of the President, in the event that the President is unable to fulfill said duties, until such a time as the duties are re-assigned.
• To provide support to any member of the Executive, as required.
• To be primarily responsible for cases (student issues/complaints) that require HESA intervention, and are deemed appropriate for intervention by HESA. The VP Academic will be assisted by all Executive but will ultimately be responsible for ensuring that cases classified as being appropriate for HESA intervention are dealt with in a suitable and timely manner.
• To attend all HESA meetings and functions (as is deemed acceptable by the Executive).
• To be responsible for attending all and bringing issues to undergraduate program committee meetings, and other relevant bodies.

A By-Election will be held on Tuesday, February 9 in HEB 301 from 12:30 - 2:00. We encourage students who may be interested to attend. No RSVP is required.

Being part of the HESA executive offers valuable volunteering experience and is an excellent opportunity to meet other students and professionals. Hope to see some of you there!

AHEA/HESA Mixer

Japan-Canada Consortium Forum - Feb 15 - 23, 2010

Passionate about environmental issues? Discuss ideas, thoughts and opinions with other undergraduate students, and researchers from across Canada and Japan.

Apply by November 30, 2009 for a chance to be selected for a trip to Tokyo, Japan to attend the Japan-Canada Consortium forum, hosted by Meiji University. This forum will be from February 15 - 23, 2010.
(Airfare, accommodation and ground transportation between Narita Airport and hotel in Tokyo is provided)

Application forms can be submitted to Xiao Zhang at the Prince Takamoto Centre here on campus (through east Asian Studies). Her email is ptjc@ualberta.ca and she is located in 3-25 Pembina Hall.

Academic Status


- One (1) undergraduate student from each Japan-Canada Consortium member institution will be selected to attend the Forum in Tokyo.

- Third- or fourth-year students will be given priority, although applications will be accepted from all undergraduate students.

- The area of study is open, but the student must have a strong interest in environmental issues in Canada, and preferably in Japan as well.

- Applicants should be in good academic standing.

- Knowledge of the Japanese language is NOT required.

- Applicants should demonstrate strong leadership skills, but must also be a team player.

Travel Costs

The following costs will be covered for the student by JACAC:

- Airfare between the nearest major airport and Narita, Japan.

- Accommodation in Japan.

- Ground transportation between Narita Airport and the hotel in Tokyo.

Students must pay for the following expenses:

- Ground transportation to/from the local airport, including daily transportation in Japan (approx. $100).

- Meals (approx. $200).

- Other personal expenses (travel insurance, Visa, etc.)

Travel Plan

Students will depart Canada on Saturday, February 13, 2010, and return on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Students are responsible for making the necessary arrangements for any missed classes (a letter of invitation can be provided if required). Hotel arrangements will be made by the Forum organizer, and students will most likely share a room with one or two other students.

Student Selection Process

Students should apply by November 30, 2009, by submitting the following to their respective institutions:

- An objective statement (300 words max).

- Completed application form (can be downloaded online at http://www.ptjc.ualberta.ca).

- Copy of academic transcript(s).

- References (at least two, preferably including one from outside the university).

Successful applicants will be notified by December 18, 2009. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected for participation in the Forum will be contacted.

Fill the Pit Food Drive!

To help feed those in need this holiday season our Faculty is hosting the Fill the Pit Food Drive! Non-perishable food donations will be collected in the Ag/For Pit area from November 12^th to December 3^rd. To further your incentive to donate Dean Kennelly has posed a challenge: Students vs Staff, with the winning group getting the opportunity to pie a few members of their choice from the losing team on the last day of classes!

We are a Faculty of ~1800 undergraduate and graduate students; if each one of us donates 5 items, to help feed those in need this holiday season, we will easily surpass our goal of 10, 000 points:

Silk Painting Workshop

HESA has decided to have two silk painting workshops on November 28th at 9:00am-12:30pm and 1:00pm-4:30pm. It will cost $50.00 per session which includes all the supplies needed to produce two silk scarves. This class will be guided by Lesley Stafiniak and assisted by Rachel Rogers. All of the proceeds go to our annual ACHES conference.

Halloween Bowling Night!

Challenge your professors at our Halloween Bowling Night!

Details:
Date: Tuesday, October 27th
Time: 6:30 pm
Location: Ed's, located at West Edmonton Mall (Phase III food court)
Cost: Admission per person is $10 and includes shoe rental and 1-2 games.

You may sign up at our office (GSB 204-E) during our office hours (Tuesdays Only from 12:30 - 5:00). HESA executives will also be visiting classes at class-end to accept applications and payments.

Payment is required upon sign-up to guarantee you a spot. Spots are limited and are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Some professors from Human Ecology may even be there!

Students are responsible for their own modes of transportation. A group of students, including the HESA executive, will be taking the bus. We encourage students planning to attend to make travel arrangements with others that are attending.

Costumes are not mandatory, but are highly encouraged. Hope to see some of you there!

T-Shirt Contest for HESA WEAR

HESA WEAR needs a makeover!

HESA is organizing a T-Shirt Design Competition for Human Ecology students. Your design may be selected to be printed onto t-shirts supplied by American Apparel, and possibly even onto tote bags and pins!

Details:
- Your design must be related to Human Ecology. It can incorporate both areas of study (Clothing & Textiles/Family Ecology), or focus on one. In other words, we may have two separate designs!
- Note: To clarify, we are not replacing the official Human Ecology logo. However, your complete design must relate to Human Ecology and can be specific to HESA WEAR.

Optional: Include a witty catchphrase or tag-line to accompany your submission. It does not necessarily have to relate directly to your logo. If chosen, the catchphrase or tag-line may also appear on the t-shirts.

- The design must be within the dimensions of 8 x 10 inches, with a minimum of 300 DPI (Resolution).

- Send your designs to hesa@ualberta.ca in PDF format, with the subject "Contest Entry". Please be sure to include your full name and your area of study, and a brief paragraph about your design inspiration.

- Deadline for submissions is October 16th. Orders will follow in the week October 26th - 30th.

- You can get a free t-shirt if your design is selected!
